Flag Retirement Ceremony

Flag Day 2017

Join Southport for its annual Flag Retirement Ceremony on Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. More than 600 U.S. flags will be properly retired as we pay tribute to those who serve and have served in the United States Military.

When the United States flag becomes worn, torn, faded, or badly soiled, it needs to be replaced with a new flag and the old should be “retired” with all the dignity and respect befitting our nation’s flag. The traditional method of retirement is to incinerate the flag, however, today we are not burning a flag we are retiring a symbol of America’s honor, courage, and strength. Therefore we request that all remain silent during this ceremony.

If you have a flag thats ready to be retired you are welcome to join us on June 14 to add your flag to the fire. If you are unable to attend the ceremony flag can be dropped off at 6901 Derbyshire Rd., Southport, Indiana where we will properly care for the flag until we retire it on Flag Day. When dropping off the flag please be sure to include a note stating where the flag had been flown.
